Chivas USA vs. RSL Recap!
Saturday, May 9
Chivas extends MLS-best start with fifth home win / Chivas gana su quinto juego en casa y se consolida como líder

Chivas USA captured a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center, with Paulo Nagamura scoring his team-leading third goal of the season in the 54th minute off a pass from Sacha Kljestan. The win extends Chivas USA’s home winning streak to five games to start the season, and at 7-1-1 (W-L-T) the team has 22 points, eight ahead of its nearest rival in the league, D.C. United, who will face Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center next Saturday night.
The Red-and-White’s record of 7-1-1 (22 points) ties the team with the 2001 Miami Fusion for the second-best record through nine games since MLS began recording ties in the 2000 season. Chivas USA is one point behind the 2000 Kansas City Wizards, who started with a record of 7-0-2 (23 points). Head Coach Preki has played a major part for all three of the top starts, coaching Chivas USA this year and playing for both the 2001 Fusion and the 2000 Wizards.

Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton made two saves to earn his league-leading sixth shutout of 2009, lowering his goals against average to just .33. After last week moving into sole possession of third place on the league’s all-time shutout list, Thornton, with 64 career shutouts, now sits just one behind San Jose’s Joe Cannon in second place.
Nagamura’s goal is his first since the first match of the season, when he scored twice in a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids. It came after Eduardo Lillingston’s cross was deflected to Sacha Kljestan, whose header found Nagamura open from 20 yards, and his first-time volley beat Salt Lake goalkeeper Chris Seitz at the far post. It was Kljestan’s first assist of the season.
Kljestan also received a yellow card in the match, and will miss next Saturday’s home game against D.C. United due to yellow card accumulation. Tonight the team fielded the same lineup as it did in last week’s match against San Jose, the first time Chivas USA has repeated a lineup in two consecutive games since June 5, 2008.

Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “I think the group played very hard, they were very organized and disciplined. They work hard for each other. You know what I always say, this group knows how to work for each other and I give them full credit. We’re happy with a win.” (For a full quote sheet, please visit cdchivasusa.com.)

Chivas USA, in first place in MLS with a 7-1-1 record (22 points), hosts second-place D.C. United (3-1-5, 14 points) next Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. A special ‘Kids Pack’ is available, giving one child 16 and under a free ticket for every adult ticket purchased (8 maximum), starting at just $15. Chivas USA at San Jose Earthquakes - Recap
Sunday, May 3
Chivas extends league lead with win at San Jose / Chivas gana en San José y sigue líder
Chivas USA captured its sixth win in the first eight games of the season, and extended its lead at the top of Major League Soccer with a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Justin Braun scored the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute, taking advantage of a defensive miscommunication to poke home a Jonathan Bornstein cross.
With the win, the Red-and-White are now 6-1-1 with 19 points, clear at the top of the league by six points, ahead of second-place Seattle Sounders FC. Chivas USA plays its next game this Saturday, May 9, against Real Salt Lake at The Home Depot Center; for more information, or to purchase tickets, visit cdchivasusa.com or call 1-877-CHIVAS-1.
Goalkeeper Zach Thornton earned his league-leading fifth shutout of the season, making six saves to preserve the clean sheet. His first and finest save of the night came less than two minutes into the game, extending to tip a low shot from Shea Salinas off the post before it was cleared by the Red-and-White defense. Thornton leads the league in saves and lowered his goals against average to .38, having given up just three goals this season.
Tonight’s match was the second consecutive game at San Jose that Chivas USA has won by a 1-0 score, with the last road win against the Earthquakes coming on October 11, 2008. In both matches, Justin Braun scored the only goal; tonight’s was his first of the 2009 season. Bornstein’s assist was also his first of the season; midfielder Gerson Mayén played the final 11 minutes of the game and still leads MLS in assists, with four.
Chivas USA midfielder Sasha Victorine entered the match as a 74th minute sub for Eduardo Lillingston, making his 2009 debut, returning from microfracture surgery on his left knee on Nov. 12, 2008 to play the final 16 minutes of the match.
The team has Sunday and Monday off before resuming training on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. at The Home Depot Center; a full schedule of the team’s activities will be released Monday.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “We scrambled in the first 20 minutes then were able to settle down and control the game. We played the ball well and created many chances to score again, but we are happy with the win tonight.” (For a full quote sheet, please visit cdchivasusa.com.)
Chivas USA returns home on Saturday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. PT for a grudge match against fellow 2005 expansion club Real Salt Lake. Chivas USA arrives in San Jose
Chivas USA players (left to right) Sasha Victorine, Jesse Marsch, Jonathan Bornstein, and Zach Thornton joke around while waiting for the team's bags in the San Jose airport.Chivas USA arrived Friday evening in San Jose ahead of Saturday night’s match against the Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m., and will be broadcast live in Southern California on W Radio 690 AM, and tape-delayed on FS West at 10:00 p.m. (pre-game show starts at 7:00 p.m. on W Radio and 9:30 p.m. on FS West).
One player who is traveling with the team for the first time in 2009 is midfielder Sasha Victorine, who has not yet played this season due to a knee surgery he underwent last October. The UCLA grad and SoCal native arrived at Chivas USA in a mid-season trade last year, and had 2 goals and 1 assist in just 5 games (4 starts) before suffering the knee injury that ended his season.
Victorine is excited to have the chance to be back on the road with his teammates.
“You definitely forget what it’s like traveling when you haven’t been there for a while, but it’s good,” he said after the team landed in San Jose. “It’s nice to get out and feel the camaraderie with your teammates when you’re on the road. I’m excited no matter what, just to be out, and hopefully get the chance to play.”
As for the opportunity to potentially play in tomorrow’s match, Victorine knows that it will take some time for him to adjust from practicing with his teammates, which he has been doing since March, to an MLS match.
“It’s a different experience,” he said. “Practice is practice, but you can’t get the same atmosphere as a game, just because of the speed. I think that’s the key, why it’s taken a little bit longer [to return from injury], just getting back up to speed and quickness and the rhythm. I feel pretty good. I think it’s going to be a little while until I’m all the way back, feeling 100% comfortable, where I think I should be, but it’s a process.”
After Saturday night’s match in San Jose, Chivas USA will face Real Salt Lake at The Home Depot Center on May 9 at 7:30 p.m. PT. For more information on either game, or to purchase tickets to the Red-and-White’s next home game, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com.
