Saturday, April 25
Win keeps Chivas in first place / Chivas triunfa y sigue líder de la MLS
Chivas USA earned a 2-0 win over FC Dallas on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center behind a fine effort from goalkeeper Zach Thornton, who made six saves, including point-blank stops on Kenny Cooper and Dax McCarty in the first half, to earn his fourth shutout of the season. The shutout was the 62nd of Thornton’s MLS career, which ties him with Tony Meola for third place on the all-time MLS shutout list.
Gerson Mayén earned his fourth assist of the year on Chivas USA’s second goal, giving the midfielder the MLS lead in the category.
FC Dallas was reduced to 10 men in the 25th minute when goalkeeper Dario Sala used his hands outside the box to make a breakaway save on Chivas USA forward Chukwudi Chijindu, who started his first match for the Red-and-White.
Atiba Harris scored his second goal of the season in the 68th minute on a header from 10 yards out past Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse, who had entered the match for Dax McCarty after Sala’s red card.
The goal came after Paulo Nagamura switched the ball to the right wing for Mariano Trujillo, whose cross found Harris in the middle of the box.Chivas USA closed the game out in the 91st minute on a counter attack after a Dallas corner. Zach Thornton punched the ball clear to Gerson Mayén, who saw forward Alecko Eskandarian sprinting behind the Dallas defense. Mayén played the ball into space while Eskandarian was still in Chivas USA’s half of the field, and the forward ran onto the ball and finished the breakaway for his first goal of the 2009 season.
The 20-year-old Mayén, who joined Chivas USA in 2008 from the club’s youth system, earned his fourth assist of the season on Eskandarian’s goal, and is currently alone atop MLS in assists, ahead of six players tied for second with three assists. The team resumes training next week at The Home Depot Center; a full schedule of the team’s activities will be released Monday, which is an off day for the team.
Chivas USA travels next weekend to face the San Jose Earthquakes, currently in fourth place in the Western Conference with a 1-3-2 record (W-L-T) after a 2-0 loss tonight at Seattle Sounders FC. Next Saturday night’s match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on W Radio 690 AM, and will be Tape-Delayed on Prime Ticket, with kickoff scheduled to air at 10:00 p.m. PT.

Chivas USA fell 1-0 in Toronto on Wednesday night at BMO Field but remains in first place in the Western Conference with a record of 4-1-1, with 13 points in 6 games. Tonight’s loss in front of 19,915 fans ended the Red-and-White’s undefeated streak of five games so far in the season.
Toronto midfielder and former Chivas USA player Amado Guevara scored the only game of the match at the 36th minute of play when he took advantage of a loose ball in the penalty area and beat goalkeeper Zach Thornton.
Chivas USA returns tomorrow to Los Angeles and will train Friday morning ahead of Saturday’s home match against FC Dallas. Saturday’s match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. Tickets can be purchased at cdchivasusa.com or by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1.
The Red-and-White is still perfect in 2009 at The Home Depot Center having won its previous three home matches against Colorado Rapids (2-1), Columbus Crew (2-1) and Seattle Sounders (2-0).
Chivas USA has not yet kept the same starting lineup for any of the six games thus far this season.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “It was a tough game. Different and difficult conditions, bouncy, windy. We fought but at the end we came short. I thought that they might have been a little bit luckier than us and may be slightly better than us and they got three points…I think we were a little soft on the play (the goal). They got a lucky bounce. We should’ve done better”. (For a full quote sheet, please visit cdchivasusa.com.)

Behind the scenes with Leo Percovich!
Percovich apprenticed under goalkeeper coaches throughout Europe and Latin America, including stints with club sides Real Madrid, Valencia, Stuttgart, Cruziero and Pachuca, as well as the national teams of Brazil, France, and Uruguay.
Quotes from Kljestan and Thornton
Kljestan:
“I think it’s the discipline and the attitude we have when we come on the field. As a unit, our four midfielders and our four defenders know that we work hard for each other so that if we get off our positions we have guys that run hard to make it up. I think we all cover each other’s backs…”
Thornton:
"The guys have done a very great job, they’ve closed down spaces, they’ve defended well, and they’ve made my job a lot easier… all the credit goes to the guys in front of me.
We have confidence in our team… the main thing is to keep it going. We always look forward to the next challenge."

Chivas USA vs. LA Galaxy - SuperClasico Recap
Saturday, April 11
Unbeaten Chivas tops in MLS (AUDIOS)
Chivas USA continued its undefeated start to the season and reached the top spot in MLS with a 0-0 draw ‘at’ the LA Galaxy in The Home Depot Center, improving the team’s record to 3-0-1 (W-L-T). The Red-and-White now host Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, April 18 at The Home Depot Center. Seattle currently sits second in the West with a 3-1-0 (W-L-T) record, following Seattle’s 1-0 loss Saturday night at home against Kansas City.
A total of nine cards were given out over the course of tonight’s match, including three red cards. Chivas USA midfielder Paulo Nagamura was dismissed just before halftime for his second yellow card, while the Galaxy’s Alan Gordon received his second yellow in minute 71, and Galaxy defender Gregg Berhalter received a straight red for a tackle in the 79th minute that prevented a breakaway for Red-and-White forward Alecko Eskandarian.
Though neither team found the back of the net, both teams had many chances, with Chivas USA holding the edge in shots, 12-8. Eduardo Lillingston, Paulo Nagamura, and Sacha Kljestan all forced diving saves from Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, while Zach Thornton recorded four saves for the Red-and-White to earn his second shutout of the year.
This was the second of five matches for Chivas USA in the month of April, four of which will take place at The Home Depot Center. After a 2-1 home win over Columbus and the 0-0 ‘away’ draw against the Galaxy, the Red-and-White next hosts the expansion Seattle Sounders on Saturday, April 18. Tickets for the match can be purchased at cdchivasusa.com or by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1. The team then closes the month with an April 22 match at Toronto and an April 25 home match against FC Dallas.
“I knew the emotions would be pretty high… I thought we were solid, and obviously at the end of the game, when now we have a man up, it looked like a [hockey] power play. We had three or four good chances to score and we didn’t, so we’ve got to give them credit.” (For a full quote sheet, please visit cdchivasusa.com.)

Alecko Eskandarian in charity poker tournament Friday night!
Follow this link to see the flyer for the tournament - there are still spots left (it costs $100 to participate) and all of the proceeds go directly to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
If you would like to participate, you can call Pam Ryan at the Torrance Marriott at 310-543-6018. The event starts on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
Alecko is excited to play in the tournament (his style: "I'm aggressive. I'll bluff more than I'll fold. I don't fold easy, ever."), and also to donate to such a worthy cause.
Here are his quotes on how he got involved in the event, and what it means to him:
"The Children's Miracle Network is the charity, and actually my roommate introduced me to it. My roommate works at the Torrance Marriott, and I know last year they had an event and she came home and she was talking about it and how there's a miracle child that comes and talks to them, and she said she had tears in her eyes.... So that got my attention."
"When I was in D.C. I did a lot of work with the children's hospital out there, and I just love working with kids, especially the kids that are unfortunate to have these illnesses or these bad breaks in their life. I think they just have so much courage."
"I used to love going and working with the children's hospital because I think I got more out of it than the kids did. For me it was just amazing to visit these kids, hear their stories, find out what they're dealing with on a day-to-day basis and it really put life in perspective for me. So that's why I try to work with them as much as possible.
"When my roommate told me about this event coming up with the Children's Miracle Network, I jumped on it. Obviously, I love poker as well, so it just made perfect sense to donate to a good cause, and play some poker, and hopefully impact some kids' lives."
