Unbeaten Chivas tops in MLS (AUDIOS)
Chivas USA continued its undefeated start to the season and reached the top spot in MLS with a 0-0 draw ‘at’ the LA Galaxy in The Home Depot Center, improving the team’s record to 3-0-1 (W-L-T). The Red-and-White now host Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, April 18 at The Home Depot Center. Seattle currently sits second in the West with a 3-1-0 (W-L-T) record, following Seattle’s 1-0 loss Saturday night at home against Kansas City.
A total of nine cards were given out over the course of tonight’s match, including three red cards. Chivas USA midfielder Paulo Nagamura was dismissed just before halftime for his second yellow card, while the Galaxy’s Alan Gordon received his second yellow in minute 71, and Galaxy defender Gregg Berhalter received a straight red for a tackle in the 79th minute that prevented a breakaway for Red-and-White forward Alecko Eskandarian.
Though neither team found the back of the net, both teams had many chances, with Chivas USA holding the edge in shots, 12-8. Eduardo Lillingston, Paulo Nagamura, and Sacha Kljestan all forced diving saves from Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, while Zach Thornton recorded four saves for the Red-and-White to earn his second shutout of the year.
This was the second of five matches for Chivas USA in the month of April, four of which will take place at The Home Depot Center. After a 2-1 home win over Columbus and the 0-0 ‘away’ draw against the Galaxy, the Red-and-White next hosts the expansion Seattle Sounders on Saturday, April 18. Tickets for the match can be purchased at cdchivasusa.com or by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1. The team then closes the month with an April 22 match at Toronto and an April 25 home match against FC Dallas.
“I knew the emotions would be pretty high… I thought we were solid, and obviously at the end of the game, when now we have a man up, it looked like a [hockey] power play. We had three or four good chances to score and we didn’t, so we’ve got to give them credit.” (For a full quote sheet, please visit cdchivasusa.com.)
