Chivas falls 2-1 at Columbus before SuperLiga/Chivas USA cae 2-1 en Columbus antes de la SuperLiga (AUDIOS)

Chivas USA fell by a score of 2-1 against the Columbus Crew in front of 12,658 fans on Sunday at Columbus Crew Stadium, just sixth days before the SuperLiga 2009 opener against Mexico’s Tigres UANL on Saturday, June 20th at 7:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center in Carson.
With today’s result, Chivas USA is now tied with the Houston Dynamo in first place in the Western Conference with a record of 8-4-3 (W-L-T) and 27 points. However, the Dynamo (8-2-3) have played two fewer games than the Red-and-White.

Chivas USA forward Eduardo Lillingston scored his sixth goal of the season at the 39th minute when he fought and won the ball to a Crew defender, slid the ball past goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum, and scored Chivas USA’s only goal of the match. Lillingston leads the team in goals with six. However, Crew’s Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored in the 61st and 87th minute to give the home team the victory and stretched the Crew’s undefeated streak to nine games.
Chivas USA defender Ante Jazic played his first game of the season (70 minutes) after recuperating from a concussion he suffered in preseason. Defender Mariano Trujillo also reappeared in the lineup after serving a yellow-card accumulation suspension on Wednesday at Houston.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on today’s match: “We don’t want to make any excuses but for whatever reason, we ran out of gas… I’m surprised in the first goal that they got off a goal kick. It’s the second time we concede a goal off a goal kick… first in Houston, It’s the exact same play. So it’s disappointing… it happens in soccer, it’s a fast game, you got to think fast, react fast, and we certainly didn’t react fast” (For a full quote sheet, please visit cdchivasusa.com.)
The Red-and-White returns to Los Angeles tomorrow morning and will resume training on Wednesday. Chivas USA hosts Tigres UANL of Mexico at 7:00 p.m on Saturday at The Home Depot Center in SuperLiga 2009’s game opener in Group A. For the second consecutive year, Chivas USA takes on top teams from Mexico and MLS in SuperLiga. A full schedule of SuperLiga media activities in Southern California, including team arrivals, press conference and practice times, will be released on Monday.
