Chivas USA falls 4-0 in New England

After a scoreless first half, Chivas USA gave up a goal in the 53rd minute and three more in the final ten minutes of the match to fall 4-0 to the New England Revolution tonight at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro , Mass. Revolution midfielder Steve Ralston had a goal and two assists, while Chivas USA now looks toward its third straight road match next Saturday at Real Salt Lake.
The loss drops the Red-and-White to 8-10-6 (W-L-T) on the season, good for 30 points, and keeps the team in third place in the tight Western Conference. Only five points separate the second through seventh positions in the division, and the top three teams in the West will automatically earn a playoff spot.
After a scoreless first half in which Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy made several good saves, Taylor Twellman opened the scoring for the Revolution in the 53rd minute after a give-and-go with Steve Ralston.
Chivas USA battled for the equalizer until Ralston earned his second assist of the night, laying a ball off for Jeff Larentowicz, whose 25-yard rocket beat Kennedy to make the game 2-0 in the 83rd minute. In second-half stoppage time, Khano Smith and Ralston both scored unassisted goals to put the final score at 4-0.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “We could have been better than what we showed in the second half, especially after we gave up the first goal. Then I felt too many guys put their heads down, lost a little confidence, and we lost our way.” (For a full quote sheet, please visit www.cdchivasusa.com.)
