Chivas USA 2-1 Toronto FC :: Harris goal elevates Chivas to 3rd place in West / Con gol de Atiba Harris, Chivas sube al tercer lugar del Oeste
Forward Atiba Harris scored a game-winning goal in the last minute of injury time to give Chivas USA a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC in front of 12,561 fans on a warm, clear night at The Home Depot Center.
With the win, Chivas USA moves into sole possession of third place in the Western Conference, the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division. The Red-and-White now have a record of 7-9-6 (W-L-T) and 27 points, trailing Real Salt Lake by three points and the Houston Dynamo, who host Chicago on Sunday, by five in the division.
Chivas USA trailed 1-0 after Toronto’s Jim Brennan scored on a breakaway in the 19th minute on an assist from Rohan Ricketts. However, the Red-and-White struck back less than a minute later, when Alecko Eskandarian, making his first ever start for Chivas USA, took an Ante Razov pass and finished to knot the game at one.
Though Chivas USA outshot Toronto 20-5 over the course of the game, the winning goal did not come until after the 93rd minute, when the team finally broke through the Toronto defense. Sacha Kljestan, serving as the team’s captain, drove a corner kick on the ground into the box, where defender Bobby Burling let the ball run through his legs to Atiba Harris, whose left-footed shot was slowed by Toronto goalkeeper Greg Sutton before trickling over the line.
The win was the second come-from-behind victory in the history of the team, and also the second this season, after the team came back from a 1-0 deficit to beat D.C. United 3-1 on May 17, also at The Home Depot Center.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “It was one of those crazy games. I thought, [a goal] is never coming, but then it finally came in the last minute of the game. I’m pleased with three points, we put ourselves now in a good spot, and hopefully we’ll build on this.” (For a full quote sheet, please visit http://www.cdchivasusa.com/.)
Chivas USA was without seven players due to injury and suspension: Maykel Galindo (sports hernia surgery), Jesse Marsch (fractured jaw), Claudio Suárez (R hip strain), Carey Talley (L thigh strain), Raphaël Wicky (R ankle surgery), and Alex Zotinca (R knee surgery). Also out was defender Shavar Thomas, who was suspended due to yellow card accumulation.
Both Atiba Harris and Sacha Kljestan will miss the team’s next league match after picking up a yellow card in tonight’s game.
Chivas USA faces Tauro F.C. on Tuesday night at The Home Depot Center in the crucial second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Round. Tauro, of Panama, won 2-0 last Tuesday in Panama City, and Chivas USA will look to overturn the deficit in the total-goals home-and-home series. Parking for that match is free, and tickets can be purchased by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or 1-213-480-3232, or by visiting http://www.ticketmaster.com/ or http://www.cdchivasusa.com/.
Next Saturday’s game at Toronto FC will take place at 4:00 p.m. ET (1:00 p.m. PT) and will be broadcast live on TeleFutura and FSN Prime Ticket, as well as W Radio 690 AM. Chivas USA will be without Sacha Kljestan, who will be with the U.S. National Team, and Shavar Thomas, who will also miss Tuesday’s match against Tauro while with the Jamaican National Team, both for World Cup qualifiers, as well as Atiba Harris due to yellow-card accumulation.

'Pescado' y 'Lobo' regresan a Los Ángeles! Ruiz and Guevara return to LA!
This Saturday night at The Home Depot Center, Chivas USA will square off against Guatemala captain Carlos ‘El Pescado’ Ruiz and Honduras captain and former Chivas USA player Amado ‘El Lobo’ Guevara of Toronto FC in a crucial match, as the Red-and-White look to start moving up in the standings. After earning a 0-0 draw against San Jose this past Saturday, Chivas USA sits tied for fourth place in the Western Conference with a record of 6-9-6 (W-L-T) and 24 points, just three behind second-place Real Salt Lake. Toronto FC, meanwhile, has a 7-9-5 record, and is tied for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Should they appear, it would be Guevara’s first game against Chivas USA after leaving the team in 2007, and Ruiz’s first since joining Toronto in a trade from the LA Galaxy last week. Chivas USA falls 2-0 against Tauro F.C. in CONCACAF Champions League debut/ Chivas cae en debut en CONCACAF Liga Campeones
The 24-team Champions League opened today its Preliminary Round, by starting a home-and-home series. The winner between the Chivas USA and Tauro series advances to the Group Stage. The two teams will face off on September 2 in the second leg of the match at the Home Depot Center in Carson with the winner advancing to the league's Group D, that includes Santos Laguna of Mexico, Municipal of Guatemala, and the winner of the Preliminary Round matchup between LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica and the Puerto Rico Islanders of the USL First Division.
Tauro’s Edwin Aguilar scored the first goal of the match at the 7th minute to give his team the lead at half-time, Aguilar, who also plays for Panama’s National Team, added his second goal in the 67th minute on a pass from Luis Fernando Escobar.
The decisive return leg between Chivas USA and Tauro F.C. will be played on Tuesday at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., at 7:00 p.m. PT. Parking is free for the game, and tickets, starting at just $15, can be purchased by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1.
Chivas USA needs to win by a score of 3-0 in the second leg of the match in Los Angeles to secure a spot in CONCACAF Champions League’s Group Stage. According to CONCACAF’s rules of the tournament, in the event the two teams are tied on aggregate score at the end of the second leg match, the away-goals scenario (excluding any goals scored in overtime) will determine the winner of the series, meaning that if Tauro F.C. scores a goal or more at the Home Depot Center, Chivas USA will have to win by a three-goal differential. If Chivas USA wins by 2-0, the match will go to extra-time. If the tie remains, the team with the greater number of goals scored in the overtime periods at the end of the second match will advance. If the tie still remains, kicks from the penalty spot procedure will determine the winner.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on Tuesday night's match: “We didn’t come out the way we wanted to come out from the locker room. We fell quickly behind at the 7th minute. It was difficult for us, we were caught by surprise and we were 2-0 behind. We created one or two opportunities with Atiba Harris… if he scores, it was going to be another game but we don’t score and we go to half-time 1-0 down. At the second time, I tried to push the tempo a little bit, we made one mistake and we got punished. We are still not out of it, hopefully we can get together and may be get two or three [players] back.”
The Red-and-White will face MLS side Toronto FC at The Home Depot Center on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 7:30 p.m. PT. Carlos ‘El Pescado’ Ruiz and Honduras captain and former Chivas USA player Amado ‘El Lobo’ Guevara of Toronto FC return to Los Angeles in a crucial match against Chivas USA. The game is also Chivas USA’s ‘Kids Day Out’, with fans receiving free Rally Towels courtesy of Gatorade, and chances to participate in a number of special activities throughout the game (information below).

Chivas USA viaja rumbo a tierra desconocida/ Chivas USA travels to Panama
“No.
Chivas USA travels to Panama
Chivas USA players and Coaching Staff traveled early Sunday morning to Panama City, where they will face Tauro F.C. on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. PT (Live on Galavision, 7:00 p.m. tape delayed on FSC) as part of the CONCACAF Champions League’s Preliminary Round.
Chivas USA played the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night and with very little time to sleep, players had to take a plane to Panama to face an unknown opponent.
“I don’t know much about the opponent we are playing but going down there, we are looking for the win obviously. I think everybody is excited, despite how early we are here… we want to win the trophy, we want to advance”, said Chivas USA defender Bobby Burling.
“I was talking to a couple of the guys and nobody knew much about Tauro, it’s going to be interesting and we are excited”, he added.
“I think it’s a cool experience to travel to Panama. I’ve never been there. I was thinking about a minute ago about adding another country to the list where I’ve been to”, said Chivas USA defender Lawson Vaughn.
“I have no idea about this team or any of their players. I don’t even know their style of play in Panama. It should be a good test for us… the intensity of play is different and it helps us to raise our level of play where we need to play at… it helps us mentally”, he added.
Regional bragging rights are on the line as Chivas USA looks to advance to the Group Stage of the inaugural CONCACAF Champions League, which pits the best teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean against each other for a spot in the 2009 FIFA Club Word Cup.
The decisive return leg of the two-game series against Tauro F.C. is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. Chivas climbs to 4th in West / Chivas sube al cuarto lugar del Oeste
On a warm, clear Saturday night in Carson, Chivas USA and the San Jose Earthquakes battled to a 0-0 tie in front of 12,209 fans at The Home Depot Center.
The draw gives each team a point, and moves the Red-and-White (6-9-6, W-L-T) into fourth place in the Western Conference, tied on 24 points with the LA Galaxy and the Colorado Rapids. The Earthquakes (5-9-7) remain two points back of Chivas USA in seventh place in the West.
Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton, making his fifth start for the club, earned his first shutout with his new team, making three saves to preserve the clean sheet. His diving stop on a Ronnie O’Brien shot in the 85th minute ensured a point for the Red-and-White.
A new-look line-up for Chivas USA featured Jonathan Bornstein playing on the right side of defense for the first time since last season, and gave midfielder Jorge Flores his first start since June 5 against the New York Red Bulls. Right midfielder Kraig Chiles made his second start of the season, and Sacha Kljestan returned from the Olympics and National Team duty to play 90 minutes in the center of the midfield, his first match with the team since July 20 in the SuperLiga and his first time wearing the captain’s armband for Chivas USA.
Two forwards also returned from injury to play a part for the Red-and-White, as Ante Razov made his first appearance in more than a month, playing 90 minutes, and Alecko Eskandarian (sports hernia surgery, June 18) entered the match as a substitute in the 59th minute, and came close to scoring his second goal of the season.
The team will depart LAX at 8:00 a.m. PT Sunday morning for Panama City, where the Red-and-White will play the first match of their 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League campaign. Chivas USA allowed four goals in 24 minutes during the first half. Houston’s Stuart Holden scored in the 11th minute, Kei Kamara added another goal at the 22nd minute, Nate Jaqua scored one more six minutes later, and Kamara scored again (35’) for a 4-0 lead before halftime.

Midfielder Carey Talley left the game early (13th minute) with a thigh injury and was replaced by Keith Savage.
Due to World Cup qualifying games, midfielder Sacha Kljestan (U.S. National Team) missed the match, as well as three Houston players (Dwayne De Rosario, Pat Onstad, and Brian Ching). Chivas USA currently has a total of 11 players listed on its injury report, and was without several key players, including Justin Braun (R ankle sprain), Jesse Marsch (fractured jaw), Lawson Vaughn (R knee sprain), Raphaël Wicky (R ankle surgery), and Alex Zotinca (R knee ACL surgery).
The Red-and-White continues its winless streak at Robertson Stadium, where it has never won and owns now a record of 0-5-2 (W-L-T), including playoffs.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on the match: “They were sharp from the first minute. They came in the field, ready to play. They were aggressive. They played the game that they needed to play.”
The Red-and-White returns now to The Home Depot Center for the new California Clásico against the San Jose Earthquakes. Coming off a 4-0 win over the MLS-leading New England Revolution, the Earthquakes trail Chivas USA by just two points in the standings, setting up a vital match for both team’s playoffs hopes.
“He tenido oportunidad de poder anotar pero he quedado cerca.

Chivas USA MF Jesse Marsch was diagnosed with a fractured jaw late Thursday night after receiving a blow to the face from the Galaxy’s Sean Franklin in the final quarter-hour of the match. Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on Thursday’s match: “At the end of the day, I’m really, really proud of my group. We played like 10 lions, or like 10 hurt lions, and I’ve got to tip my hat to them.
